The app does not hear anything

Akort+ needs the microphone to measure pitch. On iPhone, enable it under Settings → Akort+ → Microphone. On Android, under Settings → Apps → Akort+ → Permissions → Microphone. On Mac, check Akort+ under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. In the browser version, grant the microphone from the lock icon in the address bar. If another app is holding the microphone exclusively, quit it and try again.

How do I tell it which string I am tuning?

You do not. Akort+ hears what you play and finds the nearest pitch itself. That is also why non-standard tunings work.

What does makam mode do?

It measures against the 53-comma Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek system of Turkish makam music, naming the pitches that fall between the Western semitones directly — the ones used on the bağlama, oud, kanun, ney and tanbur. Chromatic mode is standard twelve-tone equal temperament.

Why does it say "A+4" rather than "B flat"?

In makam mode every pitch is named against the nearest natural. The same sound can be spelled differently in traditional notation; the measured pitch is identical, only the spelling differs.

How does transposition work?

If you have retuned your instrument but still think in your usual positions, open Settings → Transposition and pick the note you play and the pitch it now sounds as. If your D string now sounds B, set "D = B"; hearing B, the app shows D. Only the names change — the cents reading still measures the pitch you are actually sounding.

My ensemble tunes away from 440 Hz

Adjust the A4 reference between 415 and 466 Hz under Settings → Reference pitch.

The gauge is too strict / too loose

Set the in-tune range to ±3, ±5 or ±10 cents under Settings → In-tune range.
